"Mr. Shapiro was hired as a consultant, not an attorney, the media had it all wrong," said Marty Brenner, a famous anger management and domestic violence counseling consultant, who was hired by Michael Lohan, Ms. Lohan's estranged father.
Mr. Brenner, who was in court with Mr. Lohan and Hollywood image consultant Michael Sands, told The Times-Tribune that there is concern that jail, and the subsequent 90-day drug treatment program Superior Court Judge Marsha Revel has ordered, would have little effect on Ms. Lohan.
"When she goes into treatment, the main thing is getting her off drugs," said Los Angeles-based addiction expert Marty Brenner. "She'll need to be evaluated, and she will need group and one-on-one sessions, but, most importantly, she'll have to learn how to change."
According to a probation report released Wednesday, Lohan is on a slew of prescription medications for pain, depression and anxiety.
"This is a girl who shows signs of an addictive personality," Brenner said. "She hasn't taken any of this seriously, and if you don't do that, [treatment's] not going to work. The whole thing is about changing your actions, your behavior, your friends [and] your outlook."
Lindsay, 24, conveniently checked into the LA-based “safe haven” on July 14, only six days before her jail time begins, not nearly enough time to effectively detox her body.
“The problem is, it’s not a long enough period for her to get off of all her medication,” Los Angeles-based addiction expert Marty Brenner says, explaining, “To detox off all the medications she’s taking, it takes at least a couple of weeks. She’ll still be going through her detox in jail.”
Not only is Lindsay taking one of the strongest (and most dangerous) painkillers on the market, but she’s also been prescribed a dangerous mixture of anti-depressants and stimulants — something Los Angeles-based addiction expert Marty Brenner says might kill the actress before she even begins to serve her 90 days in jail.
“This 14 days [before her time in jail] gives her an excuse to really use drugs,” Brenner tells HollywoodLife.com. “Because she has the signs of an addictive personality, she’ll abuse it. She’ll say, ‘Screw it. I’m going to jail.’ It’s scary. She could take Dilaudid, or take all of them. If she survives all that — I hope she will — she will have one of the toughest, hardest detoxes of her life.”
Brenner, who has worked with the Lohan family before, advises them to hire an addiction specialist or doctor to monitor Lindsay so as to make sure she doesn’t overdose during this vulnerable time. Lindsay is required to appear in court at 8:30 a.m on July 20. At that time she will be taken to Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood where she is to stay for 90 days, followed by 90 days in court-ordered rehab — if she doesn’t succumb to her unhealthy addictions, that is.
“They like to believe they are special and above the law. Even more, they like to create the image that they are above the law,” celebrity psychiatrist Carole Lieberman, M.D. tells HollywoodLife.com. She added, “If Jane Doe missed a court date, there would be hell to pay. So these celebs like to flaunt the fact that they are not being punished as drastically as the average citizen.”
Agrees addiction expert Marty Brenner, "If it was important to Lindsay, she’d [have been in court]. A lot of celebs think they’re above the law because they get a slap on the wrist and let go. [Lindsay’s] charge is a tough one. There are no more slaps on the wrist."
